Special Projects
Keeping Kids Fit
Keeping Kids Fit is a new, long-term project addressing childhood obesity. Workshops and online resources will target families with children ages 2-12 from African-American and Hispanic/Latino backgrounds to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Groups of children will also record and reflect upon striving for a healthy lifestyle by using video cameras to document their experiences for broadcast and web-based offerings. For more information visit www.VegasPBS.org/KKF. |

Reading For Smiles
The Reading For Smiles project was initiated in October 2001 to provide dental health resources to families in need. Families learn about dental hygiene through a workshop featuring video clips, songs and hands-on activities. Children who participate in these workshops take home resource bags stuffed with new toothbrushes, dental flossers, an age-appropriate dental health book, and a variety of resource materials for parents.
In January 2007, RFS was presented the Outreach Community Impact Award by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA). RFS was praised for its innovation and creativity, especially in serving Latino families. |

Literacy Learning Kits
Vegas PBS Ready To Learn Literacy Learning Kits are designed to "bridge" the literacy gap from school to home. Over 3,000 literacy kits have been distributed to schools throughout the Clark County School District. Each literacy kit provides materials, ideas and discussion questions for each step of the "Read, View, Do" learning triangle.
As a component of the "Open Doors" Community Collaboration Grant recently awarded to Vegas PBS and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, young people's librarians will be implementing their use in local libraries. The kits will also be available for checkout to the general public.
